SUBSTITUTED p-OLIGOPHENYLENES AND THEIR IMPORTANCE AS ORGANIC RADIATION- DETECTORS

Journal Article · · German Sci. Bull.
OSTI ID:4794845
Studies were made on the substitution and substituted groups with regard to the solubility of the p-oligophenylenes. Discussion is given on methods of synthesis, such as the organo-metallic carbonyl and Ullmann reactions, preparation of starting products, properties of substituted poligophenylenes, and substituted p-oligophenylenes as effective organic radiation detectors. Aromatic iodine compounds were used as starting materials for both syntheses. The substituted p-oligophenylenes possess important solubility properties not shared by the unsubstituted parent substances. As a result of the investigations, predictions can now be made as to the solubility of a substance with a known structure. Several advantages and fluorescent properties of the substituted p-oligophenylenes as solutes for liquid scintillators are given. One advantage is that the substances can be prepared quite easily by using relatively simple and cheap methods of synthesis. (P.C.H.)
