SIMPLE TUNNEL DIODE COINCIDENCE CIRCUIT FOR LIQUID SCINTILLATION COUNTING
A fast tunnel diode discriminator and coincidence circuit, connected directly to the output of two photomultipliers, was built to avoid the need of using an amplifier. Each discriminator consists of one tunnel diode with a switching time of 0.5 nsec. The triggering level was changed from 10 mv to one volt by changing the supply voltage V/sub B/ from 150 to 90 mv. Measurements were made with two photomultipliers viewing a 20 ml liquid scintillator (toluene; 6 g/1 PBD; 100 mg/1 POPOP), using a series of sources in the energy range from Co/ sup 57/ to Co/sup 60/. It was found that it would be more convenient to work with high gain photomultipliers, since, with the ones used, work had to be done at the maximum reconmmended tube ratings to obtain the required output current.
