THE DISTRIBUTION OF HEXAVALENT URANIUM AND TETRAVALENT THORIUM BETWEEN ALCOHOL-NITRIC ACID SOLUTIONS AND THE STRONGLY ACIDIC CATION EXCHANGER DOWEX-50. SEPARATION OF URANIUM FROM THORIUM

Journal Article · · J. Chromatog.
A study was made of the adsorption behavior of uranium and thorium on the strongly acidic cation exchange resin Dowex-50 in alcohol-nitric acid mixtures. Equilibrium studies showed that both uranium and thorium are strongly adsorbed on this resin from solutions containing a high percentage of aliphatic alcohol. Based on these results, some theoretical explanations of the adsorption behavior of uranium and thorium could be glven, and a method was developed for the quantitative separation of uranium and thorium by means of a column operation.
