A plug is designed for sealing the bore of a standpipe providing access to the core of a steam-cooled or steamgenerating reactor. The plug is of the type wherein a flexible ring, expansible radially by axial loading from a spring to effect a seal, is carried on a plug body with latch members for engaging with the pipe bore, and it is provided with a weighed body so that axial loading from the spring is relieved until the body is supported other than from the plug.
