A plugging and sealing device for open-ended bores is designed which may be operated remotely. The device comprises a cylindrical plug body with a series of locking balls for engaging a circumferential channel in the bore, a spring- urged sleeve urging the balls into their locking position, a sealing piece, a plunger, and a toggle mechanism for urging the sealing piece to make the seal. The sealing piece has a coating of a metal, e.g., Ag, Au, or Cd, for deformation to provide a tight sealed fit. (D.L.C.)
