A locking device for securing together interfitting coaxial tubular members is patented. The device will not impair the efficiency of any intermediate sealing device and can be actuated without applying a large torque. A ring of balls is mounted between the tubular members. One member has a ball- contacting nut, and the other member has a locking recess with a part-conical surface, which is engageable by the balls during rolling to draw the members together and then lock them together as the balls enter the recess. The locking device can be used with a remotely operable closure mechanism for clamping cylindrical containers for fuel elements. (M.P.G.)
