A plug and locking means are designed for closing the ends of vertical standpipes in gas-cooled reactors. The plug comprises cap and closure parts, the closure part having a sealing surface for closing the pipe and the cap part being connected to the closure part by a bellows coupling. Hydraulic motor means is provided for using the pressure of the fluid in the pipe to lock the plug in place. (D.L.C.)
