SHIELDING CALCULATIONS FOR DAPHNE REACTOR. PART II

Journal Article · · Chem. & Process Eng.
OSTI ID:4796562
The top shield of Daphne consists of a 61-cm-thick layer of barytes concrete. At a reactor power of 0.1 kw (design maximum), the total dose rate behind this shield from fast neutrons, core gamma rays, and capture gamma rays is calculated to be 28 mr/hr. The calculations are carried out for the case in which the fuel elements consist of stacks of parallel plates. If fuel elements composed of plates arranged between concentric cylinders so as to form a hollow annulus are used, the dose rate is over 90 mr/hr. Effects of shield irregularities are taken into account. Shutdown access hazards and the thickness of lead required to shield spent fuel elements for transportation are also considered. (T.F.H.)
