Immunization against schistosoma japonicum in rhesus monkeys produced by irradiated cercariae

Albino mice and rhesus monkeys were innoculated with irradiated cercaria to determine the immunization against Schistosoma japonicum. Mice inoculated with cercaria exposed to 500 to 60,000 r showed the presence of immature worms in the 2000-r group, mature worms and eggs in the 500-r group, and male worms with testes and female worms with ovaries but without eggs in the 1200-r group. In the 1700-r group, all the mice harbored only immature worms except one mouse which harbored also one male worm with testes. Cercaria exposed to 1700 and 2000 r were used as the immunizing vaccine against S. japonicum in monkeys. The results show that in the immunized monkeys the maximum number of eggs per gram of stool per day varied frora 0 to 80, while in the non-immunized it varied from 14,790 to 88,400. From these results it was concluded that inoculations of monkeys with irradiated cercaria of the human strain of S. japonicum gave marked protection against a subsequent challenge with the same human strain.
