A luminescent reaction of uranium with sodiurn trimetaphosphate was found to be one of the most sensitive reactions for detecting uranium directly in aqueous solutions. A method is proposed for the quantitative determination of uranium by its luminescence in a 0.1% solution of sodium trimetaphosphate. Uranium is separated from the extinguishing impurities by the extraction with a solution of tributyl phosphate in carbon tetrachloride; calcium nitrate is used as a salting out agent. Uranium is re-extracted with a 0.1% solution of sodium trimetaphosphate. The advantages of this method are given in comparison with a method suggested previously for the quantitative determination of uranium by its luminescence in 5% phosphoric acid. (auth)
