HISTOLOGICAL CHANGES IN THE STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS OF LYMPH NODES DUE TO X- IRRADIATION

Whole-body x irradiation of 400 r was given to mice, and lymph nodes in various parts of the body were examined histologically. The earliest reaction appeared in the form of secondary nodes in the lymph nodes after irradiation, consisting of nuclear condensation and destruction. About 8 to 12 hr after irradiation, phagocytosis was enhanced and phagocytic cells migrated out of the lymph nodes. However, the findings varied somewhat according to the location of the lymph nodes. The peripheral lymph sinus showed a decrease of lumen, and the intermediate sinuses conversely had widened lumina. This was most striking at 10 hr after irradiation. In the connective tissue, the argyrophilic fibres were influenced by x irradiation, but no effect was exerted on the elastic fibres. (Abstr. Japan Med., 2, No. 2, Feb. 1962)
