THE EFFECT OF X-RAYS AND NITROMIN ON THE MITOTIC INDEX AND SUCCINIC DEHYDROGENASE ACTIVITY OF AH$sub 130$ AND AH$sub 7$$sub 974$ ASCITES HEPATOMAS

Tumor cells were intraperitoneally transplanted into rats, and the animals were given a single whole-body x irradiation of 40, 200, 500, and 1000 r, or a nitromin administration of 0.01 or 0.1 mg/100 g body weight. The succinic dehydrogenase activity of AH/sub 130/ decreased to a minimum at 30 min to 1 hr after x irradiation. That of AH/sub 7974/, on the other hand, showed a more marked and lasting response. A similar tendency was noted in the mitotic index as between the two hepatomas. The succinic dehydrogenase activity of AH/sub 130/ was markedly suppressed as early as 30 min after nitromin administration, while that of AH/sub 7974/ showed a less pronounced decrease with slower response. The reduction in the mitotic index of AH/sub 130/ was profound and lasting, in sharp contrast to AH/sub 7974/, which displayed nitromin resistance. Thus the AH/sub 130/ and AH/sub 7974/ strains showed different responses to x rays and nitromin, suggesting the existence of different modes of action. No appreciable difference was found in the grade of cell degeneration as between AH/sub 130/ and AH/sub 7974/, in relation to x rays and nitromin. Increase in number of paired and triple cells was observed only after nitromin administration, not after x irradiation. (Abstr. Japan Med., 2, No. 2, Feb. 1962)
