A kinetic study was made of the reduction of UO/sub 3/ to UO/sub 2/ by hydrogen and carbon monoxide and of the conversion of UO/sub 2/ to UF/sub 4/ by hydrogen fluoride. The reduction reaction is an interfacial reaction proceeding via the UO/sub 2.6/ phase, with CO reacting more readily than H/sub 2/. The reactivity of UO/sub 2/ toward HP is a function of its surface area which increases with (a) lower reduction temperature, (b) the presence of sulfate impurity in the UO/sub 3/. The de composition of UO/sub 3/ to U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ and conversion of the latter UO/sub 2/ and UF/sub 4/ was also studied and the kinetics are reported. The rate of hydrofluorination of UO/sub 2/ prepared by this route is dependent upon the UO3 decomposition temperature rather than upon the U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ reduction temperature. It is shown that for UO/sub 2/ to be reactive toward HF it must possess both an adequate surface area (>2m/sub 2/g) and sufficient internal porosity to accommodate the volume increase associated wlth conversion to UF/sub 4/. Some experiments on the interaction of UO/sub 2/ single crystals with HF are also reported. (auth)
