STUDY OF LONG COUNTERS BY THE MONTE-CARLO METHOD (in French)

Journal Article · · Bull. soc. roy. sci., Liege
OSTI ID:4793956
The long counter is a fast neutron counter, in which a BF/sub 3/ low neutron counter is surrounded by a cylinder of paraffin acting as moderator. A study was made in an attempt to increase the length of the sensitivity plateau. The phenomenon studied was the scattering and slowing down of fast neutrons by collisions with the C and H nuclei constituting the paraffin. This essentially statistical process was investigated by the Monte-Carlo method. The relative cross section of the long counter as a function of the energy of the incident neutron was calculated and the results compared with the experimental results. The correlation between theoretical and experimental results was excellent. (J.S.R.)
