NUCLEAR REACTOR FUEL ELEMENT AND METHOD FOR MAKING SAME

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4793730
A method is outlined for fabricating a clad fuel plate without undue loss of cladding material and with a reliable metallurgical bond between the fuel and the cladding. The cladding frame comprises a pair of end members provided on their opposing edges with V-shaped grooves, and the fuel member similarly is provided with beveled end portions which are inserted into the V grooves. The assembly is then heated in a special jacket and rolled to the final shape to obtain bonding between the fuel and the cladding. The angle of the beveled end portions is selected to prevent undue bulging or deformation of the areas adjacent the grooves during the rolling process. The finished fuel plate can be used in the seed portion of the Shippingport Pressurized Water Reactor. (D.L.C.)
