IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO SINTERED URANIUM DIOXIDE

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4793455
A process is outlined for preparing sintered UO/ of high density and stoichiometric composition from ammonium uranate. In the process, ammonium uranate is calcined at 350 to 450 deg C for 5 to 20 hr, reduced in dry cracked NH3 in two stages, first at 350 to 450 deg C and second at 600 to 700 deg C, and reoxidized in the cold in an O/sub 2/-containing N/sub 2/ current. After incorporation of a molding additive, the oxide is compressed in vacuo, followed by crushing and screening, compressed again under a pressure of 2.5 to 5 metric tons/sub 2/cm/sub 2/, and, after removal of the molding additive, sintered in dry cracked NH3 for 5 hr at 1250 to 1400 deg C: One advantage of this method over one using uranium peroxide is shorter calcination time.
