An apparatus for detecting fission products in a first fluid carrier (water) is designed which effects transfer of the fission products to a gas carrier and thence to a second fluid carrier for counting. In the apparatus, the contaminated water is caused to percolate through a porous plate into contact with a gas stream moving parallel with the plate. The fission products Kr snd Xe charged into the gas decay to form Rb and Cs which are caused by an electrostatic field to move toward a second plate to be carried away by pure water for counting. The apparatus may be used in a continuous or intermittent manner to monitor coolant from water-cooled reactors. (D.L.C.)
