For the displacement of elements, e.g., control rods inside nuclear reactors, a "Magnetic Jack" drive is used. This drive comprises a casing made of a material permeable to magnetic fields and a bar made of a ferromagnetic material sliding in this casing. lt comprises further two identical drive units, each comprising a ring-shaped piece surrounding the said bar and movable axially inside the casing along a short distance, e.g., 1 to l0mm. Each drive unit is provided with three coils positioned outside the casing, the first one surrounding the ring and serving to clamp it magnetically to the bar and the two others being respectively positioned near the two extremities of the ring for moving it axially in one or the other direction. The movement of the two rings is oscillatory and is effected simultaneously in such a way that the rings always move in opposite directions to each other. For displacing the bar in a given direction, the ring that is in movement in this direction is clamped to the bar by the action of the magnetic field of the appropriate middle coil. In order to make the movement of the control rod more continuous, a damping unit is connected between the magnetic bar and the control rod. (NPO)
