STEP BY STEP DRIVE MECHANISM AND CONTROL ROD DRIVE MECHANISM FOR NUCLEAR REACTORS UTILISING THIS DRIVE MECHANISM

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4797345
The control rod of a nuclear reactor is connected with a drive bar having a preferably prismatic cross section, each side face of which is provided with a toothed rack, the toothed faces being perpendicular to the direction of movement of the bar. This movement is effected by the action of hydraulic jacks, each of which is movable in the same plane and perpendicular to the direction of movement of the bar. Each jack has a movable portion provided at one of its extremities with teeth having essentially the same shape as the teeth of the racks, so that the teeth of the jack may engage with the teeth of a rack corresponding to that jack, in order to move the bar in a forward or reverse direction. The forward movement of the jack to engage it with the rack is controlled by periodical connection of the jack with a source of pressurized fluid, while its withdrawal movement is effected by spring action. The cycles of movement of the different jacks are phase shifted, so that corresponding to given phase shifts the bar moves either forward or backward. (NPO)
