STUDY ON THE BEGINNING OF THYMUS ATROPHY AFTER RONTGEN IRRADIATION. III. THE BINDING BETWEEN DEOXYRIBONUCLEIC ACID AND PROTEIN IN RADIATION DAMAGE OF TELL NUCLEI

The bonds between deoxyribonucleic acid and protein are loosened or destroyed in the nuclei of the thymus cells of rats after a whole-body irradiation. This radiation effect can be seen even before cell death, during the second hour after irradiation. By determination of certain nucleoprotein preparations before and after a whole-body irradiation it was found that this binding, which is damaged by irradiation is very important for the maintenance of chromosome structures. The radiation effect is erased, if calcium-ions are added to the damaged nucleoprotein. The amount of the calcium-ions, necessary, is proportional to the radiation dose. It is possible that calcium causes a reunion of the loosened bindings between DNA and protein. (auth)
