The activity of a number of enzymes is increased in the atrophic thymus of an irradiated animal. By using cathepsin, which spilts gelatin, as an example, it can be shown, that this radiation activation is not caused by the atrophy of the organ; instead, more enzyme can be found per whole organ than before. It ss unlikely, that the increased cathepsin activity is caused by a release of inactive, bound enzyme. Therefore, an active new synthesis of enyzme in the atrophic organ must be assumed. This enzyme-synthesis starts about the same time as the phagocytosis of cells, recognizable in the histologic picture. It starts 12 hours after whole-body irradiation with 1000 r in the thymus, several hours earlier in the spleen. It would be better to call this enzyme- activation an enzyme-induction. (auth)
