A proportional counter using pressurized He/sup 3/ is designed for detecting thermal and epithermal neutrons. In the counter, a high electrostatic field is established across the pressurized He/sup 3/ and current pulses due to He/sup 3/(n,p) reactions are measured; for detecting epithermal neutrons only, a Cd or B shield may be used. The advantages of the counter are that high efficiencies are obtained at low voltages and gamma radiation is not detected. The counter is particularly useful to neutron well logging with or without a neutron source. (D.L.C.)
