The proportional counter described has an enclosure containing He/sup 3/ at pressures preferably in the range of 2 to 20 atm absolute. An electrode extending into the enclosure in contact with the He/sup 3/ is electrically insulated and supported from the enclosure walls. A voltage source connected between the walls of the enclosure and the electrode serves to provide an electrostatic field for the collection of ionized particles produced in the confined zone of He/sup 3/ by thermal and epithermal neutrons. A Cd or B shield may be used when detection of epithermal neutrons only is desired. Efficiencies markedly higher than those of BF/sup 3/ counters are obtainable. In the application of the detector to radioactive well logging, logging speeds may be substantially increased. (A.G.W.)
