INTERNAL FRICTION PEAKS IN COLD-WORKED METALS

Journal Article · · Acta Met.
Internal friction peaks which appear after cold-working were investigated in ten metals including copper, silver, aluminum, nickel, titanium, zirconium, magnesium, cobalt, iron, and uranium. Two or three peaks, which disappear upon annealing at room temperature, appear in all metals. A peak which does not disappear after room temperature annealing is found in some of the ten metals. This peak is sometimes accompanied by a satellite. In the case of aluminum, this persistent peak is presumably different from the Bordoni peak. Activation energies and frequency factors were obtained from peak shifts, concerning all the peaks observed. Possible mechanisms for the processes responsible for these peaks are briefly discussed.
