PROCESS FOR MAKIN GRAFT COPOLYMERS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4791038

A process is outlined for making graft copolymers from polyethylene. The process comprises the steps of subjecting polyethylene in vacuum to high- energy ionizing radiation for a dose of 0.04 tp 20 Mrep to form active centers thereon, converting the centers into oxygenated sites by contacting the irradiated polyethylene with oxygen within 5 min after irradiation, and contacting the oxygenated polymer with a monomer. The polyethylene preferably has a molecular weight of 15,000 to 60,000, and the monomer can be any vinyl or vinylidene compound capable of polymerization by peroxygen compounds or free radicals to form an addition polymer.
