IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO GRAFT COPOLYMERS OF CONDENSATION POLYMERS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4792050
A method is given for modifying a shaped structure, e.g., fibers, of a synthetic oxygen-linked condensation polymer to have increased dyeability and reduced tendency to retain static charges while still retaining its desirable properties, e.g., wear resistance, resilience, etc. The method comprises producing free radicals on the polymers by means of high-energy ionizing radiation, while in contact with a vinyl amide compound, to form graft copolymers thereon. Several examples of the method are given in which acrylamide or poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) is grafted onto fabrics of polyethylene terephthalate and the dyeability of the resulting fabrics determined.
