PRODUCTION OF GRAFT COPOLYMERS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4018613

A process is given for the production of graft copolymers from polyatyrene and other polymers which do not readtly produce active centers upon irradiation in the presence of oxygen. The process comprises carrying out the irradiation in the presence of both oxygen and a material capable of producing a high yield of free radicals without undergoing chain oxidation, and contacting the irradiated polymer with a monomer to produce a graft copolymer. The material is a solvent for the polymer, preferably CCl/sub 4/ or other perhalogenated alkanes. The best peroxide yields are obtained with relatively high polymer concentrations, with an optimum of 50 g/l polystyrene. Three examples of the process are given in which acrylonitrile and methyl methacrylate were polymerized onto polystyrene. (D.L.C.)
