SOME RARE EARTH SPINS, AND THE HYPERFINE STRUCTURE OF $sup 176$Lu

Journal Article · · Proc. Phys. Soc. (London)
The nuclear spins of the isotopes Nd/sup 143/, Nd/sup 145/, Sm/sup 147/, Sm/sup 149/, Dy/sup 161/, Dy /sup 163/, Er/sup 167/, and Lu/sup 176/ were mea sured by the atomic-beam magnetic-resonance technique. Earlier paramagnetic resonance results for the first seven isotopes were confirmed. The spin I of Lu/ sup 176/ was shown to be 7. The shell model accounts for the ground-state spins of the first four isotopes, and the collective model for those of the Dy, Er, and Lu isotopes. The hyperfine structure of Lu/sup 176/ in the state /sup 2/D/sub 3/2 was determined from DELTA F = 0 resonances and the following values of the dipole A and quadrupole B interaction constants give a good fit to the experimental data; A = (+)138.8 plus or minus 1.0 Mc/s and B = (+)2151 plus or minus 20 Mc/s. Unpublished measurements by Ritter of gI/sup 175/, A(/sup 2/D/ sub 3/2/) and A(/sup 2/D/sub 5/2/) for Lu/sup 175/ were used to estimate the magnitude of an s-electron configuration admixture to A(/sup 2/D/sub 3/2/ ) in Lu/ sup 176/ and the following values of the Lu/sup 176/ nuclear moments were then deduced mu /sup 176/ - (+)3.07 + 0.28 nm and Q/sup 176/ = (+)8.0 plus or minus 0.7 b. The collective model with strong surface coupling predicts that Q/sup 175// Q/sup 176/ = 0.697 compared with the experimental ratio B/sup 175//B/sup 176/ = 0.702 (8), which is obtained by combining the results with those of Ritter.
