A finned heat transfer surface for reactor fuel elements is designed which maintains the desired flow pattern over the whole surface. The surface is as described in British Patent 847,214, e.g., it has helical fins interrupted by baffles, but some of the fins at spaced intervals are made higher than the other fins, thereby impeding the fluid from flowing over the tips of the fins.
