HIGH-ENERGY NUCLEAR-ACTIVE PARTICLES AND ELECTRON-PHOTON AVALANCHES IN THE CORE OF EXTENSIVE AIR SHOWERS OF COSMIC RAYS (in Russian)

The rather weak correlation between the spatial characteristics of extensive air showers and the observed height of the events indicates that processes in the vicintty of the core of the shower exert a great influence on their general behavior during pass age through the atmosphere. Study of this phenomenon involves the simultaneous measurement of the number of particles, of the energy of nuclear-active and electron-photon components in the core of the individual showers. For the experimental work a large assembly with a surface of 25-m/sup 2/ was used; it consisted of 4 series of ionization chambers placed under absorbers and hodoscopic counters and was used for determining the flux density in air. The data obtained during 1959 in the Pamir Mountains do not allow conclusions to be drawn concerning the number of particles in the extensive air showers from the energy of the nuclear-active particles, even when they are primary ones, As a result of the change of the nature of the elementary process at energies beyond 10/sup 14/ ev or because of the increase of the alpha - particles and of heavier nuclei in the composition of the primary cosmic radiation at that energy level, no energetically separate nuclear-active particles can be found in showers containing a large number of particles.
