THE NATURE OF THE PRIMARY COMPONENT OF COSMIC RAYS IN THE REGION OF HIGH ENERGIES AND EXTENSIVE AIR SHOWERS (in Russian)

An analysis was made of experimental facts concerning extensive air showers which occurred in the Pamir Mountains and that were observed at Moscow University and in Japan. From these observations it was concluded that the energy of primary particles is equivalent to E/sub o/ = 3 x 10/sup 15/ ev. It is proposed that for showers with a low-energy spectrum the exponent gamma = 1.7, whereas for higher energies gamma = 2.2, a change of 0.5. Explanations are given concenning the relationship of energy spectrum and composttion of primary components of cosmic rays in this Galaxy, indicating that such may be limited by two factors, depending upon the source of the rays and on the accumulation of a wide variety of particles in the Galaxy. A study was made of the scatter ratio E/ N of a large number of energy spectra. An explanation of the extremely wide fluctuations which are observed when N < 10/sup 5/ is presented. The evidence indicated a predominance of heavy nuclei in the regions of high energy. (TTT)
