A STUDY OF THE (n,p) AND (n,np) REACTIONS WITH THE HEAVY NICKEL ISOTOPES (in Russian)

Fast neutrons (14.1 Mev) were produced by a T(d,n)He/sup 3/ reaction on irradiating a tritium--zirconium target with 100 kev deuterons. A recoil proton telescope with a polyethylene radiator (0.2 mm thick and 2 cm in diameter) and a thin CsI(Tl) crystal (1 mm thick and 1.5 cm in diameter) served as a neutron monitor. The induced BETA activity and half life were measured on a multichannel scintillation counter with a thin CsI(Tl) crystal. -Ine Al/sup 27/ (n p)Mg/sup 27/, Al/sup 27/(n, alpha )Na/sup 24/, and Ag/sup 107/(n,2n)Ag/sup 106/ r eactions were used to calibrate the equipment. The cross sections in millibarns were found to be 86 for the Ni/sup 61/(n,p)Co/sup 61/ reaction, 22 for the Ni/sup 62/ (n,p)Co/sup 62/ reaction, 34 for the Ni/sup 62/(n,p) Co/sup 62*/ reaction, 5 for the Ni/sup 64/(n,p)Co/sup 61/ reaction, 2 for the up 61/ reaction, and 6 for the Ni/sup 64/(n,np)Co/sup 63/ reaction. A plot of the log of the reaction cross section versus Z/A gave a straight line for the nickel isotopes. (TTT)
