COMPARATIVE STUDIES OF SOLVENT EXTRACTION OF PROTACTINIUM, TANTALUM, NIOBIUM, AND ZIRCONIUM FROM STRONG HYDROCHLORIC ACID (in German)
The extraction of Pa, Ta, Nb, and Zr from strong HCl solutions was investigated with the following extraction media: undiluted tri-n-butylphosphate, 0.0l M tri-noctylphosphine oxide in benzene, and undiluted di-isobutylcarbinol. In addition to pure HCl, mixtures with strong complexing agents --hydrofluoric acid, oxalic acid, and tartaric acid--as well as pure perchloric acid as the aqueous phase were used. From the data obtained a simple method for obtaining pure Pa from concentrates was given: Ta and Nb were extracted from 6N HCl--l-3N HF with diisobutylcarbinol and then the aqueous phase was saturated with AlCl/sub 3/. The Pa was then extracted with the same extractant. Zr rendains in the aqueous phase. The chemical behavior of the four elements in these aqueous phases was qualitatively compared. Pa showed a greater similarity to Zr than to its homologs Ta and Nb. (tr-auth)
