THE CHEMISTRY OF PROTACTINIUM. I. THE NATURE OF SPECIES IN HCl SOLUTIONS BY SOLVENT EXTRACTION AND PAPER ELECTROPHORESIS

Journal Article · · Journal of Inorganic and Nuclear Chemistry (England) Merged with Inorg. Nucl. Chem. Lett. to form Polyhedron

Experiments on the extraction of Pa/sup 233/ into tri-n-butyl phosphate from hydrochloric acid solutions are described. The effect of fluoride, phosphate, citric, lactic, and tartaric acids on the distribution coefficient was studied. Ethyl acetoacetate was found to be a good extracting agent. A semi- closed type apparatus was designed for use in electrophoresis studies of Pa/sup 233/ in HCl solutions. From the variation of the anion/cation ratio with the concentration of HCl, the nature of the cation-to-anion conversions could be inferred. The mobiiity of Pa/sup 233/ is greatly enhanced by the presence of traces of fluoride ion, and the histograms clearly indicate the presence of cationic species. (auth)
