EFFECT OF HELICAL MAGNETIC STRUCTURE ON THE MAGNETOSTRICTION OF DYSPROSIUM (in Russian)

A very complex dependence of magnetostriction on the field strength and temperature has been found in dysprosium in the temperature range from 120 to 190 deg K. The involved dependence is due to the fact that in the indicated temperature range besides magnetostriction corresponding to rotation of the magnetic moments of the laminae in the basis plane, there also exists a magnetostriction concomitant with destruction of the helicoidal magnetic structure (for H = H/sub kp). Moreover, in the neighborhood of the Curie point THETA /sub 2/ a large paraprocess magnetostriction arises which is caused by exchange forces between atoms located in neighboring basis planes. (auth)
