ANOMALOUS THERMAL EXPANSION AND MAGNETOSTRICTION OF SINGLE CRYSTALS OF DYSPROSIUM

Journal Article · · Phys. Letters
Measurements showed very large magnetostrictive strains (about 6 x 10/ sup -3/) at temperatures near the Curie point. Anomalous thermal expansions were observed from above the Neel point, BN = 178 deg K, to below the Curie point, theta = 85 deg K; between these temperatures a spiral magnetic structure can be changed to a ferromagnetic structure by the application of a strong magnetic field. The appearance of orthorhombic structure due to magnetostrictive effects in the conversion to ferromagnetism resulted in no distortion of the thermal expansion curve at the Curie point in a magnetic field. The magnetostriction seems to predominate in determining the thermal expansion. (auth)
