THE MAGNETOSTRICTION OF DYSPROSIUM METAL

Journal Article · · Proc. Phys. Soc. (London)
The magnetostriction of dysprosium metal is measured at 20.3 deg K and from 90 to 206 deg K. At the lowest temperature, at which the metal is ferromagnetic, the magnetostriction constant lambda /sub s/ is found by extrapolation to be 3.4 x 10/sup -2/. The magnetostrictive behavior of dysprosium in the antiferromagnetic region can be qualitatively accounted for in terms of the deformation of a helical spin system. (auth)
