A gas-cooled graphite-moderated reactor is designed with storage spaces in the part of its concrete radiation shield lying at the side of the core. Used fuel elements removed from the core may be stored in these spaces until they can be safely transported to a processing plant. Thus, the use of a storage pond with attendant corrosion problems is avoided. (D.L.C.)
