NUCLEAR REACTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4786169

A reactor having vertical channels closed at the top by a biological shielding plug and extended at its lower extremity by tubular means supporting in the core region a chain of connected fuel elements is described. This supporting meairs is partially enclosed by a tube passing through a coolant exit header mounted inside the reactor vessel above the core. This latter tube forms a part of the reactor channel and communicates by lateral openings with the header. the lower end of the support tubes communicates with the inside of the hollow fuel elements in which coolant circulates from the bottom to the top. This lower end of the tubular support communicates by a lateral opening with the reactor channel at a level which also occupies the coolant exit header. This lateral opening may be closed gradually by an axially sliding valve, the movement of which is controlled by a steering rod rotatably mounted in the axis of the support means and passing through the shielding plug, to control the individual coolant circulation inside the reactor channel.
