METHOD FOR THE PREPARATION OF REACTOR FUEL ELEMENTS (in German)

In the preparation of fuel elements with random grain sizes in a carrier metal melt, the wettability of the fuel element particles with respect to the carrier metal melt presents great difficulties. These were overcome when molecular hydrogen was led through an especially high frequency electric arc for the purpose of transforming the molecular hydrogen largely into atomic hydrogen. Then the atomic hydrogen was led to the carrier metal melt, at the surface of which are found the fuel particles introduced into the melt for deoxidizing and protecting the system against further oxidation. Finally the fuel particles were wet and surrounded by the carrier metal melt. (J.S.R.)
