Synthesis of Methionine in X-irradiated Rats

Journal Article · · International Journal of Radiation Biology and Related Studies in Physics, Chemistry and Medicine
Experiments were conducted to determine the influence of 600 r of whole- body x irradiation on the betainehomocysteine transmethylase activity and the synthesis of methionine from added homocysteine in the liver of rats. The liver homogenates of x irradiated rats had an increased ability, which persisted for 44 hours, to transfer methyl groups from betaine to homocysteine. The amount of methionine formed from added homocysteine was depressed after irradiation. The reduced capacity to synthesize methionine is probably due to the decreased availability of labile-methyl groups. That no synthesis could be seen when only betaine was added to the homogenate suggests that endogenous homocysteine levels were considerably depleted.
