EYE ABNORMALITIES IN MICE EMBRYOS CAUSED BY X-IRRADIATION OF THE MOTHERS. PART II

Mice were given a single whole-body x irradiation of 15 r on the 8th day of pregnancy. The embryos were examined macro- and microscopically on the l6th fetal day; findings were compared wlth those examined on the l3th embryonic day, On macroscopic examination, embryos with gross abnormalities were found in 59.3% of the total examined, which was approximately the same rate as in the group examined on the l3th embryonic day probably due to the maceration of cases with very severe malformations. Macroscopic eye abnormalities were found in 28.5% of the total examined, which was almost equal with those in the l3th day embryos. Eye abnormalities were chiefly microphthalmias, and these seemed to be found more on the right side than on the left. Some changes were still observed under a microscope after the l3th embryonic day. These were infolding and eversion of the inner wall on the margin of the choroid fissure, and a cystic cavity formed by the duplicated inner and outer walls. Such conditions were considered as phenocopies of hereditary uveal coloboma and bulbous cysts. Cases of aphskias were often found in sections. The lenses which might have been induced in earlier stages, degenerated under abnormal conditions such as abnormal direction of the axis of the optic cup and maldevelopment of the optic cup, resulting in apparent or secondary aphskia. Pseudencephalic embryos showed remnants of complicated infolded optic cups with a vertical axis formed directly under the brain. (Abstr. Japan Med., 2, No. 1, Jan. 1962)
