EYE ABNORMALITIES IN MOUSE EMBRYOS AND FETUSES CAUSED BY X RADIATION OF MOTHERS: PROCESSES OF PRODUCTION IN CASE OF EXPOSURE WITH 200 r ON THE 8TH DAY OF PREGNANCY

Pregnant ddN strain mice were subjected to a single whole-body x ray dose of 200 r on the 8th day of gestation. From the 11th to the 19th day fetuses were removed and examined grossly and microscopically. Fetuses on the 11th day showed complete developmental obstruction of the optic vesicle and occurrence of primary anophthalmia. On the 14th, 15th, and 17th fetal days no remnants of neural elements relating to primary anophthalmia were seen. In some cases, exencephalia with complete absence of the eye anlage, believed to be due to the extreme malformation of the brain, was noted. These presumably represent secondary anophthalmia. Some fetuses developed degenerative anophthalmia, varying from those showing remnants of the optic cup at an early embryonic stage to those developing degenerative anophthalmia at about the time of birth or severe microphthalmia. Microphthalmia was also frequently found, and this varied too from fetuses presenting an early stage of its production to those with the inner wall of the optic cup everted, malformation of the optic cup and production of infoldings, as well as those with deformities of the lens. Most of the eye abnormalities seen were cases of microphthalmia and anophthalmia but there were no cases of cyclopia and diprosopia, presumably because irradiation did not occur at a critical stage for induction of the latter anomalies.
