A fuel element is designed for fast reactors in which fuel elements are very closely spaced. The fuel element in the form of an elongated fissile body enclosed by a protective sheath has a series of bands of helical fins spaced apart on the sheath. The fins of each band are co-extensive with the fins of adjacent bands, and each fin engages at least two fins of an adjacert fuel element. In the embodimert described, the fuel elemert comprises enriched uranium fuel of tubular form, an inner vanadium sheath, and an outer niobium sheath. (D.L.C.)
