A sheathed reactor fuel element is designed with a strain indicator for detecting localized swelling of the sheath such as that due to fuel oxidation by coolant ingress. The strain indicator comprises closed alumina tubes enclosing U wire and arranged around the fuel element in such a way that swelling of the sheath ruptures the tubes, releasing fission products into the ccolant stream which in turn can be detected easily.
