IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO FUEL ELEMENTS FOR NUCLEAR REACTORS
A reactor fuel plate for use in arrays is designed which permits some distortion or swelling without interference with coolant flow. The plate comprises a fuel member enclosed by a sheath in two sheet parts, and the side edge portions of both parts are turned inwardly and secured to each other so that the turned-in portions function as edge plugs of the sheath which yield outwardly on expansion of the fuel member. The sheath is also provided with outwardly projecting ribs for spacing the plate from adjacent plates to provide coolant flow paths therebetween. Clearance is left between the sheath ends and the fuel member for endwise growth of the fuel member, A box-like container for holding an array of fuel plates is described. (D.L.C.)
