IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO FUEL ELEMENTS FOR NUCLEAR REACTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4782491

A sheathed reactor fuel element is designed with means for indicating fuel oxidation by coolant ingressing through the sheath. The means comprises a substance inside the sheath which, at a temperature above the normal operating temperature for the fuel element, expands more rapidly than the fuel member and sheath so as to distort the sheath. The sheath distortion may be detected by a strain indicator described in British Patent 900,347. The substance may be Al, Mg, or uranium iodide which undergoes a physical or chemical change at a suitable temperature. (D.L.C.)
