A method is outlined for manufacturing longitudinally finned tubes or rods from metals which are difficult to work, e.g., beryllium, stainless steel, or zirconium. In this method, a longitudinally finned billet is formed and enclosed within an envelope having complementary fins on its internal periphery, and the combined billet and envelope are extruded or drawn and the envelope subsequently removed. Two examples of the method are given in which beryllium and stainless steel were used. (D.L.C.)
