Experiments were conducted to determine the protective effects of phencyclidine, a psychotropic drug. When R mice were given 2 to 60 mg/kg phencyclidine intraperitoneally and irradiated with 1025-r x rays 15 min later, no protective effect was detected. When mice were given 4 mg/kg phencyclidine and irradiated with doses of 650 to 950 r 0.5 hr later, a protective effect was found in the mortality responses. The LD/sub 50/ for 30 days was calculated to be 828 r for the phencyclidine-treated (4 mg/kg) mice, as compared with 752.5 r for the controls. (D.L.C.)
