EFFECT OF SODIUM CYANIDE ON THE SURVIVAL OF IRRADIATED RATS AND MICE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4694997
Survival in rats and mice given a wide range of doses of sodium cyanide prior to x irradiation was compared. All treatment injections were given intraperitoneally 3 to 6 min before irradiation. Toxicity data for NaCN were also obtained. Total whole-body doses delivered were 866 and 800 r for rats and 750 and 650 for mice. Significant protection was obtained in both rats and mice. in the case of mice given 750 r, the degree of protection increased with increasing dose of cyanide, beginning at a level of about 2 mg/kg. However, in the rat given 850 r, cyanide exerted no appreciable protection until a dose of about 3 mg/kg was reached where a sharp rise in protection ensued. (P.C.H.)
